The Stampede [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parade][color=#0000ff]Parade[/color][/url] which occurs on opening day, is one of the festival's oldest and largest traditions. It is led by the Calgary Stampede Showband and follows a 4.5 km route in downtown Calgary. Attendance at the parade is usually about 350,000. The parade is also televised and has a viewing audience of over 2 million. The Calgary Stampede takes place at the Stampede Grounds, located southeast of downtown Calgary in the [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beltline%2C_Calgary][color=#0000ff]Beltline District[/color][/url]. The park is serviced by [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calgary_Transit][color=#0000ff]Calgary Transit[/color][/url]'s light rail system, the [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C-Train][color=#0000ff]C-Train[/color][/url] as well as local property owners who rent parking spaces during the 10 days of the exhibition. A major expansion and upgrading of the grounds is currently underway. The event has generated controversy due to a number of animal deaths, particularly those linked to the traditional chuckwagon races.
